Anyone have an advance listen? AAJ reviewed it.

In opposition to many critics - I liked "Melody at Night, With You", even if it sounded like George Shearing at times ;) Be interesting to hear the longer live format piano solo. I like the idea of how he incorporates themes from previous parts of the improv. Still begs the question of how much is truly spontaneous.

It's been out here for the past couple of weeks. Heard several tunes over the radio.

I'll stay away from it!

But then I'm no fan of Jarrett! He's been on an ego trip for years and this new release seems to be the apex of that trip.

I can see the point about a Shearing comparison. I'll listen to Shearing any time over Jarrett when I have the choice.

really? what constitutes this "ego trip"?

I have lots of Jarrett on ECM - Trio & Solo. I'm sure I do not need more of his music. He's brilliant - no question. But I can't find anything new listening to his latest releases what's not allready sitting on my shelfs!

Sorry.

Do you have to ask that question?

I started listening to Jarrett back in the sixties and heard him several times then. With the Charles Lloyd group, at the Cameleon Club in Paris back when he was still playing gigs and then with Miles Davis. I was not very impressed with his playing with Charles Lloyd, liked his solos at the club gig and thought his playing with Miles (on electric piano!) brilliant.

Lost touch with his playing soon after the release of the ECM solo adventure 'The Koln Concert. Thought his later explorations to be overindulgent and marred by a faked hypersensitivity not to mention his spoiled child stage attitude.

I avoid his concerts and his records nowadays but I do not keep away when his music shows up on radio or TV. Jarrett is a highly visible jazz star!

Now if I need a brain massage by a pianist, I'll take Paul Bley or Cecil Taylor or Martial Solal over Jarrett. And if I need kicks out of the piano, I'll take Dave McKenna any time!

Just some examples.

Did not mean to offend anyone. The original question was 'Anyone have an advance listen'. I replied to that!

If people get kicks out of 'Radiance', it's fine with me! I moved out of Jarrettland a long time ago and have no wish to resettle there!

That's the only problem I've had with the Jarrett Trio over the past 20 years or so. It's all exceptional music, but the albums do tend to blur together. Fortunately it's an embarrassment of riches, however, and as much as I tell myself to stop buying them and try something/someone else, I keep coming back to Jarrett. I'm actually looking forward to this one, though, because it is a solo set and (so I've read) structured somewhat differently from his set-long improvizations of the past.

yes, I do have to ask. I still don't get it. Where's the ego? Or am I just completely missing something? I like his playing, I agree with him on a lot of the audience comments (why can't people be quiet, and why is it neccessary to clap for everything?) and self-indulgence is not always a bad thing
