Soul Stream Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 (edited) I'm looking for live Lou Donaldson bootlegs. I've got a few live recordings of Lou... but looking for stuff I don't have...don't know what's out there. But would like to know at least, what IS out there. Also any live Dr. Lonnie Smith boots...Please PM me if you can help me out! Thanks, Mike Edited May 11, 2005 by Soul Stream Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 Mike, I might suggest changing your thread title to "... live private recordings." I mean, you're not really looking for bootlegs in the sense of commercial recordings of questionable provenance. You're only looking to trade for private recordings that are circulating amongst fans. I think I've got one or two more since the ones I set you up with back in the days of Board Krypton, so I'll send you a PM later today. Quote
robviti Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 (edited) Acording to the RIAA, "Bootleg recordings are illegal recordings of live or broadcast music." I don't see why Mike should change the title. It's obvious what he's looking for, and he's being honest and open about. Edited May 11, 2005 by jazzshrink Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 11, 2005 Author Report Posted May 11, 2005 (edited) Thanks Dan and Jazzshrink. Dan, I really listen to that stuff you sent me a LOT. It's some of my favorite music, and has seen much more playtime here that 99% of my CD collection. Usually, I'm not much of a live recording fan, but when it comes to those guys I can't get enough. If the word "bootleg" stirs up some controversy, I'll be happy to change or delete my post. But HAD to send out the sos to the organissimo bros. Hope to see Lou again before the end of the year. Love those live shows of his with the Dr., classic. Thanks for the help!!!! Edited May 11, 2005 by Soul Stream Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 IMHO, call 'em "private recordings" - or else "gray market material". I haven't used the term "bootlegs" since I was in high school and college (late 80's, early 90's), when what I was out for was just that - boots on vinyl (at first) and then late silver-disc CD's -- of otherwise unreleased material. I don't even call my silver-disc Miles CD's bootlegs either. I've allways called that sort of thing "gray market" material (as opposed to "black market"). I know, "gray market" is probably my own made-up term -- and I'd be curious if anyone else here has heard that term, or uses it themselves. Quote

Yes, Rooster, I think people call some items "greymarket" when their legality isn't clear. Shrink, point taken, but the issue I did not touch on is the fact that a short time ago, Jim Alfredson tried to tamp down the open solicitation of burns of commercially available recordings, so it seems to me that openly soliciting something that you identify as 'bootlegs' is also treading on potentially thin ice, if the music industry spends anytime searching the web for that sort of thing. And finally, Mike, glad you've enjoyed those recordings so much, I am going to send a PM in about sixty seconds. Quote
