Dan Gould Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 Two questions, if anyone can help: I've found a 45 on Wingate records - would this be the same Hank Marr who recorded for King and later for Doubletime? There's also a Marr 45 on Federal, which I understand was a King subsidiary. Is it safe to assume that Federal 45s were edits of his King hits like Greasy Spoon? The strange thing is that the flip side is "I Can't Go On" which I don't think appears on any of the three King LPs ... Thanks! Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 Is this Wingate WG 012 you have? If not, you've got new information that I'd love to know about. Same Hank Marr as far as I know. I would have thought that the Federal issues were the originals and the King LPs combined them. Were the Federal singles duplicated by King singles? I Can't Go On is supposedly on King LP 829 "Latest Teentime Dance Steps". Mike Quote

As far as King/Federal goes, I was only aware of the Club 502, Greasy Spoon, and Sounds from the Marr-Ket Place albums, it sounds like they grabbed another tune from another King LP for the Federal 45. Thanks for the help, Mike. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 Bruyninckx CDROM lists personnel as "Hank Marr (org) with unknown ts, g, b-g, and d Lord CDROM 5.0 copies this exact info. God bless these folks: http://capitolsoulclub.homestead.com/Detro...elsWINGATE.html which shows that there is another Wingate that has Hank Marr and Sonny Stitt - not listed in either Bruyninckx or Lord. Get searching!!!! These guys have a soul label index like what is on my page for jazz labels: http://capitolsoulclub.homestead.com/LabelListingsKey.html Mike Quote

Dan Gould Posted May 14, 2005 Author Report Posted May 14, 2005 Just found one of the Stitts, but not the one with Marr. http://www.estoreuk.net/northernsoul/listings/77.html Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 14, 2005 Author Report Posted May 14, 2005 And I just found this interesting Wingate listing: Wingate 007 A Pack The Tears Come Rollin' Oct-65 Group later changed name to Grand Funk Railroad. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 I see 4 or 5 folks listing the Marr/Stitt single online. As low as $6. I kind of think they are different tunes. No idea whether Stitt and Marr actually play together. Mike Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 14, 2005 Author Report Posted May 14, 2005 Really? I tried a google search and a gemm search and nothing fell out yet. What was your search term? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 Google - "stitt's groove" - 9 results. Check 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Mike Quote

Mike According to this, its the same tune but Stitt and Marr do not play together: In January of 1966 Wingate released ‘Marr’s Groove’ b/w ‘Stitt’s Groove’ (WIN 011). Both sides of the 45 featured the same basic backing track, with Hank Marr playing piano and organ on the ‘Marr’s Groove’ side and Sonny Stitt doing the same with sax on his side http://funky16corners.tripod.com/9_organgrooves.htm Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 Very interesting! And that date is good to know too - Stitt's other Wingate stuff has been listed as "1950s?" which has got to be wrong. Mike Quote

DMP Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 Am I correct in assuming that Marr's "King" albums have never made it to CD? His "Live at Club 502" is a pretty solid organ quartet session, rivalling some of the better known groups of the day. Quote
