wolff Posted May 24, 2005 Report Posted May 24, 2005 (edited) Frankly, I have been puzzled for years why the UK is not the leader in quality jazz vinyl re-issues. All pale in comparison to Japan, and have for 20 years. I picked up Pure Pleasure Records(UK) re-issue of Johnny Shine's, "Last Night's Dream" and it's a winner, though it's blues. On the near horizon are Abbey Lincoln's, "Straight Ahead"(Candid) and Weston's, "Little Niles"(United Artist). Re-mastered from the original master tapes by Ray Staff at Alchemy. I'll be grabbing these. Another one is "Newport Rebels" which I've heard of, but really know little about. A few of their titles are mastered and cut by Kevin Gray(Acoustic Sounds 45RPM/D2D, etc. cutter). I have enough of Gray's vinyl work(Rhino Sinatra's and APO D2D are recent examples) to know he is one of the best. After watching Classic, Speaker's Corner, 4 Men With Beards, Acoustic Sounds and Sundazed grow from nothing, here's to hoping Pure Pleasure does the same(w/o 200 gram )!!! sidewinder Posted May 24, 2005 Report Posted May 24, 2005 Wolff - I don't see much quality vinyl coming out of this country. Must of the re-issued stuff I have bought has been from Japan or the US. With respect to Blue Note, I still rate the Japanese King re-issues the tops after the US originals (and even better in the case of most of the Liberty pressings). About the only UK vinyl I have bought of late have been the Sun Ra Saturns that are churned out from somewhere over here (possibly from some-ones back-garden shed..) I wish that Dutton Vocalion would put out 200g (no - 180g ) reissues of the Derams that are just coming out on CD. Quote
porcy62 Posted May 24, 2005 Report Posted May 24, 2005 Re-mastered from the original master tapes by Ray Staff at Alchemy. ← Re-mastered? Do you mean 'mastered from original master tapes in an all analog process'? Quote
porcy62 Posted May 24, 2005 Report Posted May 24, 2005 The only UK vinyl reissues I know is Simply Vinyl, (mostly rock titles) and I don't like them. Talking about japanese pressing, I don't know the King's BN, but usually I find jap pressing deadly silent on great vinyl quality, great definition but a little 'thin', at least in the records I have. sidewinder Posted May 24, 2005 Report Posted May 24, 2005 Yes, I would agree with that assessment. The vinyl (especially on the Kings) is usually deadly silent. What I miss though from original pressings is the big soundsage and level of 'umph' - dynamic range, I guess. Quote
