Nate Dorward Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 A question: what are the best discs to hear Roland Hanna's playing? I see Cadence/North Country stocks 10 albums of his, & I'm interested in checking him out (was recently transcribing an interview with a former student of his, James Finn, who talks about him a fair bit). Jim R Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 I don't know what Cadence has, but I can recommend: Everything I Love (IPO) 2002, solo Milano, Paris, New York / Finding John Lewis (Venus) 2002, trio The Piano of Roland Hanna - Easy To Love (Atlantic / Koch) 1959, trio Quote
Stereojack Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 "Swing Me No Waltzes" (Storyville) was the one that first turned my head. Eventually became an avid fan. I think Hanna is pitifully underappreciated. Quote
brownie Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Nate, an earlier thread Sir Roland Hanna Quote
Nate Dorward Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 Thanks for the comments & the link. I think the only Hanna in my current collection is James Newton's African Flower. Will hunt out a few more recordings... Quote
sheldonm Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 ....also the NY Jazz Quartet in Chicago on Bee Hive Records! Quote

He does a particularly charming rendition of "Barbados" that always moves me. BTW, Storyville has just reissued an obscure Roland Hanna solo session that was originally issued on the Hi-Fly label. The CD apparently has some extra material as well. Quote
