Soul Stream Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 In A Sentimental Mood off her new reissue comp. Great American Songbook. Don't know the origins of it. Usually not a fan at all really of hers, but she nails it on this cut for sure. Quote
Brad Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Is that a new release or something a little older. I think a couple of things came out in the last week or two. Quote
Jim R Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 In A Sentimental Mood off her new reissue comp. Great American Songbook. Don't know the origins of it. Usually not a fan at all really of hers, but she nails it on this cut for sure. ← I agree she can have her ups and her downs, but I enjoy a lot of the stuff she did for Capitol in the 60's. I can't say if it's the same version, but "In a sentimental mood" is one of the tracks included on my most recent acquisition of hers- BUT BEAUTIFUL (Capitol, 1969), with Hank Jones, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, and Gene Bertoncini. This is one of the three CD bonus tracks, not on the original LP. Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 6, 2005 Author Report Posted September 6, 2005 I LOVE Capitol+Singers+50's or 60's....that's just a winning combination and these tracks sound absolutely gorgeous. I really, really, really didn't like Nancy Wilson...but my only exposure has been that horrible NW that slurs, over enunciates and garbles stuff to death. Many of these Capitol sides seem to be very, very listenable and enjoyable. I plan on downloading a few more on itunes. Quote
Free For All Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 I haven't flipped over everything she's done, but this is one of my desert island picks for sure. She was so influenced by Dinah Washington. I was fortunate enough to play behind her in a big band on several occasions. One of the coolest things about that was that the drummer was the fabulous Roy McCurdy- not at all known as a big band type of drummer, but he was really great. She pumped a lot of feeling into songs like "Guess Who I Saw Today", which she has performed many, many times. I'm impressed by her musicianship- she exhibits good control and sings in tune, and is not given to unnecessary scatting, which is usually a turn-off for me. Quote
Jim R Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 I haven't really examined the new releases, because I probably have most of the material already. This is the comp that got me started a few years ago: Contains: what a little moonlight can do, little girl blue ,my one and only love, the best is yet to come, midnight sun, the good life, you'd be so nice to come home to, time after time, all of you, the very thought of you, back in your own back yard, when the sun comes out, at long last love, you've changed, someone to watch over me, i wish you love, angel eyes, here's that rainy day, the song is you, miss otis regrets Quote
sheldonm Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Don't be afraid to admit something because it is different from most of the people on here. ← Quote
Dave James Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Is the phrase "unnecessary scatting" redundant? Up over and out. Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 6, 2005 Author Report Posted September 6, 2005 I just picked up the whole CD...Nancy Wilson Sings Songs Of Lost Love. It's really, really, really good. Highly recommended. I was really dissing her a few weeks ago on this board, but these early Capitol sides have turned it around for me.... Quote
couw Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 I was really dissing her a few weeks ago on this board, but these early Capitol sides have turned it around for me.... ← you may want to check out some more of the sides BN has been putting out recently. Myself, I really like "Today, Tomorrow, Forever", a very nice upbeat album which features small group settings. Lots of "pop" in there, but lots and lots of taste as well. Quote
