Hardbopjazz Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 On Coltrane's Blue Train, there are alterntive takes of Blue Train and Lazy Bird. The Blue Note discography list these 2 alterntive takes. I was speaking with someone that claims to have gotton a copy of this session of Cotrane, a bootleg that conatains many more takes of every tune from that album. He said Blue Train alone, there are 4 other takes then what's been issued. Do more takes exists from that date? I would think they would have been listed in the Blue Note discography. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 28, 2005 Author Report Posted September 28, 2005 I'm just wondering why the discography doesn't list them as either rejected or unissued. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 It is standard practice in discographies NOT to list everything. This is something I disagree with. Just look at the Blue Note listings - you'll see tk 3 then tk 9 - so where are 4 through 8? If I can get the information from the producer or the session logs, I list it. See for example the entries for the Impulse records Henry Grimes plays on (Roy Haynes: Out Of The Afternoon & McCoy Tyner: Reaching Fourth). Mike Quote

andybleaden Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Then I take it these have 'leaked' out ...must be nice to have and I hope the masters are still available....not for every session but you know...the biggies I for one ( and I know this argument has been had before and I know that we maybe should not listen to alt takes but!) would love to hear some real classics either as alternatives in the can or as part cut...sometimes for me the solo has been so wonderful and the artist so good at improvisation ( parker etc) that another take is so different..new solo new licks etc As for for Blue Train I guess I could just force myself to listen to yet another take of 'I guess I am old fashioned' or whatever it was called...only of course for scientific research you understand! Whether that would stretch to the third alt take of a Sheila Jordan track......... Quote
