monkboughtlunch
What's the story on this Riverside date: "Monk in France" I picked up the OJC CD and the cover art has the "Riverside stereo" running across the top. But it's in mono. And there are lots of sound anomalies: drop outs, mismatched levels. It's great music, but doesn't seem quite like a professional recording for Lp. Seems more like a one-off radio broadcast or something. Anybody know the story on this recording?
Michael Fitzgerald
I believe that indeed it was a radio broadcast that Riverside issued to fulfill Monk's contract. Isn't this mentioned in the notes? Or maybe it's mentioned only in the Riverside box. Mike
monkboughtlunch
No mention in the single OJC CD notes.
brownie
The Paris Olympia concert tapes were probably obtained from the Europe 1 radio station that produced the concert. Keepnews indicated in the notes to the Monk Riverside box that he had no connection with the tapes to the Paris and Milan concerts that were released on Riverside to fulfill the Monk obligations to the label. There were two concerts by Monk at the Olympia that day. Both also featured opening appearances by the Lou Bennett Trio with Jimmy Gourley and Kenny Clarke, plus Barney Wilen with the trio.
