Guest Posted October 15, 2005 Report Posted October 15, 2005 Two Disc-Set from a german label named "JazzDoor" Tracklist: Disc 1 1) Introduction 2) If I Were A Bell 3) My Funny Valentine 4) So What 5) Walkin' 6) All Of You 7) Milestones Disc 2 1) Autumn Leaves 2) Theme 3) Joshua Go-Go 4) Four 5) Seven Steps To Heaven 6) There Is No Greater Love I know that this are live-recordings from 1964 (fully available from Columbia), but beside this I can't find much about this discs on the net (is it a boot?). So does anybody know this set? I wonder if its worth the money (saw it for €12 here today) and how the sound-quality is? Greetz, Sonny Quote
John Tapscott Posted October 15, 2005 Report Posted October 15, 2005 Just from the track listing it looks like it's a rip-off of the recent Columbia reissues. Why would any one bother with it? Worth zero in my estimation. Quote
djcavanagh Posted October 15, 2005 Report Posted October 15, 2005 It is made up of tracks from the official CBS releases (Complete Concert, Miles in Tokyo, In Berlin) so if you have these it certainly isn't worth buying. It obviously doesn't contain all of the music from these albums either. Quote
JSngry Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Or, it might be a repackaging of various grey-market material that's been available on various such lables over the years. To my knowledge, JazzDoor specialises in that type of material, not the pirated legit stuff that Lonehill, Proper, etc. put out. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 I gotta say, it does look like it is the Columbia stuff. I can't come up with any other known live recording of "There Is No Greater Love", for example. It says "New York" and it says these are all from "1964" - the only NYC 1964 stuff is the Philharmonic Hall concert. And if you really must - why pay 12 when it's selling for 6.95? http://www.jazzmessengers.com/ProductInfo.asp?ref=79463 Mike Quote
JSngry Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Well, if JazzDoor has gone from grey-market to piracy, then a pox on them. Quote
djcavanagh Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 In the main they do deal with live recordings that aren't available officially but some of their Miles Davis ones are just copies as far as I can tell. They have a double set that I think is just a replica of the concert with Gil Evans that Columbia has released. Quote
Claude Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 (edited) Another example of Jazz Door's piracy activities is their Miles Davis "Fat Time" CD, which contains the material from the official CBS/Sony "Miles! Miles! Miles!" 2CD set: http://www.plosin.com/milesAhead/Disco.asp...MilesMilesMiles http://www.plosin.com/milesAhead/Disco.aspx?id=FatTime Edited October 16, 2005 by Claude Quote
JSngry Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Why are they limiting their pirate releases to Miles? Or are they? Quote
jazzbo Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 I think they've had releases from other artists. But they like to appropriate Columbia/Sony stuff. Their "It's About that Time" is the same as Sony's "Juan-les-Pins 1969" (and the Sony was out way first). Quote
djcavanagh Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 I've had a look at my copy and the recording dates listed match up with the Columbia albums. I have seen a Herbie Hancock Jazz Door cd that looked like it was taken from his Blue Note recordings with Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams. It does seem strange that they mix their releases between unreleased stuff and widely available recordings. Quote
Guest Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 OK Folks, you convinced me, I will not buy this obscure stuff. I rather buy the official live-discs from columbia some day. Greetz, Sonny Quote
