Picked up this recent reissue and needless to say, boy is it good.

also got the Live in Tokyo disc and my opinion of that one is going up.

I'm lookin' forward VV reissue. My order from CD Universe is being held up by another disk that should come out next week.

I just got this and as skeith says, it's very good. At first I was inclined to say that it's not as good as its twin (Sound of Love), but I'm not so sure upon further listening. "Yahllah" is the standout performance, IMHO. But I also really like "Folk Song for Rosie" (beautiful, spacy ballad) and the intense "Sunflower".

I might have to get Live in Tokio just for "Mumbo Jumbo" which is one of my favorite Motian tunes.

I'll be going with a friend or two on Thursday, September 7th. I hope to see skeith, David (7/4) and MD655321 there!

I just saw the price tag on this set in yesterday's Times- $35 plus a $10 minimum. OUCH!!!

any interest in Friday's sets? I have to get up early on Friday so Thursday may be prohibitive.

Yeah, the weekend price is the main reason I am inclined to come on Thursday. That, and there is always a chance to stay for the second set paying only another minimum.

I'd like to go, but let's see how I'm feeling. I'll PM you on Thursday morning and let you know. I do have to visit NYC anyways. People to see, CDs to buy.

to my knowledge there is no difference in price between Thursday or Friday night at the Village Vanguard. The Times notice seems to support that too.

I have no idea, I'd like to go Thursday. But I also wanted to catch more than one night.

I said "but let's see how I'm feeling" because I have GI problems and I may just want to hang at home.

I saw on the Village Vanguard website that I was wrong. Friday and Saturday night shows are $5.00 more expensive ($35.000) than Thursdays or other weekdays ($30.00). That price includes a $10.00 drink minimum.

However the website does indicate that some "special" shows may be priced higher and my impression from the Times, but it is confusing, is that the PMT is $35 plus $10 for all shows.

Alright... I made a reservation for me and 3 friends Thursday @ 9 PM (one more may be joining us for the second set). If anyone wants to join our group, PM me asap.

I still don't know what I'm doing. Maybe I'll just see you there.

When internet and real world friends collide!

I caught two sets of the Paul Motian trio tonight at the Village Vanguard. They played "Misterioso", "Jack of Clubs", "I Have the Room Above Her", "Monk's Mood", "Body and Soul", "Yahllah" (played with a rock-ish beat -- maybe this is how "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" would have sounded like with Motian on drums), "Dance", "Drum Music", and a bunch of tunes I didn't recognize. Motian himself was terrific -- he was particularly brilliant on "Body and Soul".

I spoke to him after the show and he mentioned that a new album has already been recorded for ECM and will be coming out in January. :tup

Good to run into David (7/4) again, one of the fellow Motian nuts on the board.

Bill Frisell, Ron Carter, Paul Motian gets released on 9/12. I wonder if this was one of the CDs they were selling at the bar.

I think next time, I'm going to sit a bit farther back. Like you said, Motian can get pretty loud. It was pretty cool to get a good look at Motian play, I'd love to see transcriptions of some of his drum parts. I wonder what the hell the logic is to his syncopation. That's where I was leading with the Munoz story - I'm even more confused by Rashid Ali. At least with Motian, I can find a trace of a pulse.

Frisell could have been lounder at points, it was hard to get a good look at him during the first set. There was guy sitting in front of me with a really huge head and another one in front of him. Later it was nice to get a good look at his picking technique and his echo pedal footwork.

Frisell and Motian are a match made in heaven, they both have a real original sense of rhythm. Lavano kind of anchors things in a way when he's soloing.

I'd like to go again next week, but Jeff Beck on Monday out here in Jersey and Torn/Berne/Taborn/Rainey at the 55 Bar on Friday - I can't make it during the week. Maybe the 17th...hmmm.

Great to hang with you again Guy and meet your friends too.
