Soul Stream Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 3 full dick cavett shows w/Ray Charles doing LOTS of full songs (hey the shows were 90 minutes, one show charles does 7 full numbers) from the early 70's GREAT, GREAT, GREAT stuff. Maybe the best stuff on video he ever did, up there with the Brazil shit for sure. Quote

Harold_Z Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 I saw that in the store. I'm glad to see the reccomendation - that's enough to tip me into getting it. Is the studio band shown? I know Harold Vick, Bob Cranshaw, Lou Volpe were doing that gig at one time. Quote

They didn't show the band, but it's a kiler and whoever's playin' organ is killing it. They do pan to the guitarist at one point and he's all denim'ed out...though it was melvin sparks for a second but realized it wasn't. Great band though, hope they do show it on some of the shows. JSngry Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 Other Cavett house band regulars were Eddie Daniels, Danny Stiles, & Bill Watrous. Quote
Harold_Z Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 Other Cavett house band regulars were Eddie Daniels, Danny Stiles, & Bill Watrous. All West Coast guys. I can't remember the details - was there an East Coast show that moved West ? Quote
JSngry Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 (edited) No, they were all NYC-based at the time (late-60s/early-70s). Daniels was also with Thad/Mel at the time, remember? The band was led by Bob(by) Rosengarden. I'm thinking that Jerry Dodgion was lead alto. Edited November 28, 2005 by JSngry Quote
Harold_Z Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 Yeah..that's right - those guys were on the East Coat back then. So Cavett had a larger unit for awhile then and a somewhat smaller unit when Harold Vick, Lou Volpe and Bob Cranshaw did it - If I'm remembering correctly that was a pretty small unit. I can't remember the other sidemen. Were there 2 Cavett shows perhaps ? Seperated by a few years ? Quote
JSngry Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 The Cavett ABC show that I remember always had a big band. Seems that I remember that he came back with a smaller show on PBS(?) with a smaller band after being cancelled by ABC ca. 1972(?). But I'm not putting money on that. Quote

Soul Stream Posted November 29, 2005 Author Report Posted November 29, 2005 o.k...watched the whole thing now. Not up to the Brazil tape for sure. but some great performances. ray bitches at length on 2 different shows how the sound is fucked up. the band is too far away he says and it's b.s. that they won't put the band behind him and show the band. the band is the studio band on all 3 shows. the 3rd show has a different guitar player who ain't that hot to my ears although it might be Joe Beck for all I know. The BIG drag is that EVERY show....dick cavett sings Am I Blue with Ray and it's a horrible/joke thing that drags on and on, reminding us now 30 years later that we could be hearing another charles classic instead of this crap. that said, ray kills on this thing. plays the fender rhodes a couple of times which is the highlight for me. a killer version of 'shake' by sam cooke and a shuffle blues instr. that's super badass.
