bertrand Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 (edited) We've talked about this on other threads, but now it's time to formalize this. I'll be in L.A. from 1/27-1/31. It'd be great to meet the L.A. contingent, either as a group or separately. I've spoken to RDK already, and I think L.A. is also the home to Adam, Noj and ValerieB. So far, I am doing the following: 1) Lee Morgan tribute at Claremont College, 1/30 2) Wayne Shorter at Disney Concert Hall, 1/28 (if only Wayne could be at the Lee Morgan concert!) We could meet before or after these gigs. I know some of you are plannning to attend one or both of these shows. As for other gigs, I checked the site that Tom Marcello pointed out last week, but didn't seen anything really gripping. I am certainly open for suggestions. I fly in pretty late on Friday, but I'm pretty open for Sunday. Is Freddie Redd playing anywhere? He will not be at the one place he played on the Friday after Thanksgiving, unfortunately. Maybe I could at least meet him for coffee or something. Wasn't someone on this board (Adam?) in touch with him? Anyway, if you would like to try to hook up, please send me a PM and I'll give you my cell and the number of my hotel in Pasadena. Looking forward to meeting you guys! Bertrand. bertrand Posted January 23, 2006 Author Report Posted January 23, 2006 Oh, does Miles Davis' ex-wife Frances Davis still work at Hamburger Hamlet? Which one? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
Adam Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 Hi, I was in touch with Freddie Redd. I'll see if his number still works. I tried to get a ticket to the Wayne Shorter concert at Disney Hall, but it is sold out! Sunday evening I have Filmforum: www.lafilmforum.org But perhaps during the day? And I also intend to make the Lee Morgan Tribute, but I make no guarantees about getting there in time, with work. I wonder if anyone is at the World Stage on Saturday night? Oh, there is another interesting thing on Saturday night - teh Luckman Jazz Orchestra, led by James Newtown. Not that you could make it to that, but... I think Dmitry is here as well. Quote
bertrand Posted January 23, 2006 Author Report Posted January 23, 2006 Adam, I was told there could be last-minute tickets for Wayne. When I booked it, there were only a few left. Please do let me know about Freddie Redd. I know the Morgan is tough because of the distance and it's a work-night. I'll be staying in Pasadena, and I'll probably spend the whole day at Claremont College. RDK brought up the idea of maybe meeting afterwards for a drink. There may also be a reception - I'll try to find out. The film forum looks interesting as well, but I would still prefer a gig if I can find one. I'll keep searching. Bertrand. Quote

bertrand Posted January 27, 2006 Author Report Posted January 27, 2006 Jon, It looks like several of us will be at the Lee Morgan tribute at Claremont McKenna college, so that's one option. Bertrand. Quote
bertrand Posted January 27, 2006 Author Report Posted January 27, 2006 I just found out there will be a Memorial Service for drummer Sherman Ferguson (who just died) at Catalina's 1-4 on Sunday. I will possibly go to that, especially if there's a chance Kenny Burrell will show up. Bertrand. Quote

Bertrand. bertrand: i will be at the memorial service on sunday. i cannot imagine that kenny won't be there. he's more than likely one of the organizers of the tribute/memorial. and he's been one of sherman's staunchest supporters in every conceivable way, especially these last years during sherman's health problems. best, valerie Quote
