Guest akanalog Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 but since this thread is here i will add my thoughts here- this album is ok. i love moon rappin'. this is no moon rappin'. what people said about this album is correct in the other thread-this album is a lot more bluesy new orleansy whatever. except i am not sure it feels authentic. it feels more like "good time music" than "soulful music". i guess part of this is the sidemen-who made me intrigued by this date in the first place. musicians like tony levin and mike manieri are on this one. and i don't think these guys are coming from a place with much soul. plus the whole thing sort of feels like it isn't mcduff's conception-more like he was thrown in there with these sort of session guys and some friends and i dunno...i think brother jack had an interesting mind and i don't think this album is a window onto that. in concept it is cool-especially because paul griffin plays some piano along with mcduff's organ, but it isn't mcduff's show on here. and brother jack can play some nice piano too anyways! i like that other blue note mcduff-to find a new home or whatever-better than this one. that one is less commercial, but straighter than moon rappin though with some of the same spaciness. perhaps water will put out that one too. Soul Stream Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 I've gotten to the point where I just really enjoy everything Brother Jack every did on Prestige or Blue Note. I think Moon Rappin' to To Seek A New Home to Who Knows What Tommorrow Brings is a progression. I see those 3 albums as a trilogy. Sure, MR is my fav and spends the most time on my player, but I'm not so sure it will always be that way. I love these 3 albums for different reasons. WKWTB might be the most commercial, but I still love it cause Jack is still layin' down some super playing and I like Joe Beck and the arrangements. Some find them hokey or contrived, but I love this era in music and how the major organists adapted. Whereas Brother Jack achieved some great things with these 3 albums as oppossed to Groove Holmes who did some really bad albums in this time. Brother Jack is just badass!!! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 yeah but then can't you also look at someone like charles earland who to me, it seems like, was able to keep more of an independent spirit, up until the mercury dreck? Quote
