HolyStitt Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 I really dig the bassist Albert Stinson. The first recording I heard him on was the Impulse reissue of "Man From Two Worlds." I thought he had a nice thick sound and seemed really funky, but eventually thought he was even funkier on "The Dealer!" I didn't really know much about him other than that he seemed to have died very young. A few years back, I asked Charles Lloyd about Stinson at gig he was playing at the Dakota (a club in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area). He said that he remembered Stinson hanging out at gigs in the L.A. area and that he didn't seen him for a while, but he came back on the scene playing bass. He said that he was someone from the past that he really missed and that he was a great bassist to play with. Stinson doesn't seem to have cut many sides. The ones I have heard are: Chico Hamilton Drumfusion, Man From Two Worlds, and The Dealer Gabor Szabo Gypsy '66 John Handy Nice View Bobby Hutcherson Oblique Has anyone heard him with Larry Coryell on "Coryell"? or with Joe Pass on "Catch Me"? or on the Pacific Jazz Trio's on the Mosaic Select? or on any sessions I haven't mentioned? relyles Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 The Hutcherson recording was my first and I believe only exposure to Stinson. I was thoroughly impressed and wish he had the opportunity to record more often. Quote
.:.impossible Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 If you do a search, there was a good deal of discussion on Albert Stinson inside a thread on OBLIQUE. Quote
Chas Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 If you do a search, there was a good deal of discussion on Albert Stinson inside a thread on OBLIQUE. Earlier Oblique Thread Whenever I think of Albert Stinson I remember Bobby Hutcherson's beautiful tone poem Now, dedicated to his departed friend . I would like to know the lyrics the choir sings on that track , but can only make out a few of them. Have these appeared anywhere or does anybody have better ears ? Quote
Guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 I think "Sparky" was on a John Handy at Montery (sp?) Jazz Festival record. I'd also like to add that he was a VERY nice man and a generous musician with his time and talent. He died in Boston, MA. age 28. Quote
HolyStitt Posted March 11, 2006 Author Report Posted March 11, 2006 Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival has Don Thompson on bass. It's very sad that he died at 28. Quote
