I was at the Aaron Davis Hall concert and recall enjoying it, although my ex-wife wanted to leave at the intermission (she was not a fan, but we did not leave). I also saw him live at least two other times - once at the Knitting Factory jazz festival with his then sextet, and then at his adopted hometown when he opened the then new Belden theater at the Bushnell in Hartford. There may have been one or two other occassions, but I can't recall at this point.

FYI, according to Discogs there was a South African CD release of "African Herbs" in 1990 as a German release of the same material on an album titled "Soweto".

It was included in the KAZ and Camden reissues titled "African Sun".

I might have said this here before, but I was a fan of Ibrahim's music as a child years before I even started my independent investigation of jazz. My father was a fan and listened to the the African recordings a lot when I was growing up. I am glad I was able to catch him last year at Jazz @ Lincoln Center. I knew there would not be many more opportunities and I had missed him twice in the two previous years when I had tickets, but was not able to attend at the last minute. I own over 30 Ibrahim recordings and I am still looking to fill in gaps. His music will always hold a special place for me.

I heard Rivers with his trio once at the Iridium in NY, and if I remember correctly it was a double bill with Andrew Hill. edited to add that internet sources confirm the double bill in October 2002.

In 2024 I believe he was 81.

In 2024 Harper performed in Hartford and I presented him a lifetime achievement award from the Hartford Jazz Society.

I have seen live with varios groups. I am looking forward to hearing him tonight.

Friday 12/12 - Ricky Ford Quartet at the Side Door Jazz Club in Old Lyme, CT. With John Kordalewski (piano), Tony Marino (bass) and Thurman Barker (drums). Solid two sets of music.

I am curious how "jazz piano albums" is defined? It seems to be albums where the leader/coleader is a pianist, but where would this put albums where piano is the featured soloist, but the leader is another instrumentalist? How would this impact the lists?

Last week I was in Ann Arbor for EdgeFest. 4-5 sets a night for four days. Good mix of music. Highlights for me were Air Legacy, Myra Melford Splash Trio and Darius Jones Trio.

In 1989 or 1990 my father organized a jazz dinner event in Brooklyn. I was recently out of college and did not drink, but somehow I wound up being the bartender for the event. Shamek Farrah and Norman Person were the leaders and Sonelius Smith was also in the band. I do not remember the rest of the musicians. At the time I had only been listening to jazz for a couple years and had no idea who the musicians were. I just knew that it was my father's friend "Tony", who if I remember correctly he collaborated with to organize the event with. Around that same time I had a copy of Impressions, but still did not know about the statute of Strata-East in the community. It was sometime after that I became more knowledgeable about the label and the musicians on it. I enjoyed reading this article and the memories it generated.

He is only credited on trumpet.

Although I could never afford, or ever be willing to pay the price for the first three rows, it is not as insane when thinking of it as a fundraiser, which is the primary purpose. I imagine it would not be as shocking when compared with other non-profit fundraiser events.
