danasgoodstuff Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 BruceH, Yeas, that's it...thanks for filling in my sketchy memory here, i think I only read this at the newstand! (wearing a tie helps to give you more time to do this...) Lowman Paulings guitar is 'da shit' (can't think of a better term right now!) and was a big influence on Steve Cropper. Quote
BruceH Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 (edited) Did Steve Cropper ever acknowledge a conscious influence? I've sometimes wondered about that, 'cause it sure seems like you can hear it. Some years ago, a company put out vinyl reprints of the albums that the 5 Royales came out with (the King ones anyway) with the original front and back covers. Have you seen them? They are a sight to behold! Edited March 23, 2004 by BruceH Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 BruceH, I've read at least a couple of things where Cropper mentions how much he dug Pauling. King albums in general had an interesting look...I've seen some of the 5 Royales. Quote
Harold_Z Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 There was an feature article and interview with Steve Cropper in GUITAR PLAYER magazine some years ago where Cropper mentions Lowman Pauling's influence on him, and I think there may also have been an article on Pauling in that magazine at one point. BruceH Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 Thanks dana. I should've known that. Pauling was a remarkable songwriter, too. Some of the 5 Royales songs have a lot more substance than the usual run of doo-wop/r&b of the time. Damn, I've get to get home and spin some their stuff! Quote
tjluke68 Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 I'm just getting into old R&B/DooWop. I've recently picked up some great compilations from the WestSide UK label that contains great sides from King, Federal, DeLuxe, RCA, Bluebird, etc. Some of my new favourites are STEVE GIBSON & RED CAPS, WALLACE BROTHERS, THE CATS & THE FIDDLE, and others. I highly recommend the WestSide comps as their much better in packaging than Collectables/Oldies! I believe much of it can found at half.com, ebay or gemm.com. Check out DOOWOPPIN, Jive Is Jumpin': RCA & Bluebird Vocal Groups! Quote
BruceH Posted March 24, 2004 Report Posted March 24, 2004 This is making me feel old....most of my doo-wop is on warped, scratchy, analog, vinyl. Girl groups, too, come to think of it. Quote
