I had heard (PLEASE correct me if it was wrong) that Joe had had a stroke and was no longer playing. What are the stats on this new live album?

I have no idea about the state of his health or the details of his latest release. That said, I seem to remember that in the 2000/2001 timeframe he had bypass surgery or some other less invasive type procedure. My memory is pretty sketchy regarding this so take it for what it's worth. I do hope Joe is in good health. Maybe someone a little more in the know can chime in regarding these matters?

You can hear samples and buy the Solo Guitar CD at : Art of Life Records

The label has plans to issue all five of the Spitball albums ( a 1970's Florida label ) that feature Joe , which are:

Spitball SB-1 Rapport ( with Wally Cirillo )

Spitball SB-2 Solo Guitar

Spitball SB-3 SoloDuo ( with Wally Cirillo )

Spitball SB-5 Straight Ahead to the Light ( with Steve Bagby )

Spitball SB-7 Peaceful Journey

The remaining Spitball albums ( without Joe ) are :

Spitball SB-4 Mindscapes ( Charles Austin and Joe Gallivan )

Spitball SB-6 Expression to the Winds ( Charles Austin and Joe Gallivan )

I am particularly looking forward to hearing the two dates Joe did with pianist Wally Cirillo . Cirillo showed great promise in the Fifties , most especially with Charles Mingus , but was off the scene in the Sixties and these Spitball dates with Diorio would be his last work , as Wally died a few years later in 1977 at the age of 50 .

Joe Diorio , who will be 70 this August , is still listed as a lecturer at the Thornton School of Music at USC , but I don't know of his present health .

Other notable offerings worth exploring from Art of Life Records include some rare trio sides by British pianist Gordon Beck , as well as some previously unreleased Tubby Hayes in a quartet with Beck .

Any comment on the Diorio reissues from anyone who has heard either the originals or the reissues?

PS There are also some releases on RAM (?) which I would like to know about if anyone has heard them.

I don't have much Diorio on CD, but I do owe him a debt of gratitude for what I learned from his instructional video. Some good concepts that opened up my playing quite a bit when I encountered it in the early 90's.

I copied some things from two books of his I have when I used to play guitar. One book had a 7" of recorded material - that is the only stuff of his I have ever heard.
