Travolta, JLo to Star in 'Dallas' Movie

LONDON — British director Gurinder Chadha announced Friday that she would direct John Travolta and Jennifer Lopez in a big-screen version of 80s TV show "Dallas."

The "Bend it Like Beckham" director said she had signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to direct the film, which will star Travolta as villainous oil magnate J.R. Ewing and Lopez as his wife Sue Ellen.

In a statement, Chadha said her appointment meant that the sort of South Asian-themed British films that made her name had "huge credibility and respect in Hollywood."

Chadha, who gave Jane Austen a Bollywood twist in last year's "Bride and Prejudice," is also involved with adapting another TV hit, 60s sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie." She said that film "is still in the pipeline, but there is still some way to go on the script."

Filming on "Dallas" is due to start in October, with the movie slated for a late 2007 release.

Is it just me or does the trend lately seem to be making movies (often bad) out of TV shows from the 70s and 80s?

The Beverly Hillbillies

Charlie's Angels

Starsky and Hutch

S.W.A.T.

Scooby-Doo

Bewitched

These are just a few and don't even count the movies that are really just longer versions of TV series.

It seems like it was the other way around at one time.

I mean didn't Holloywood used to laugh at Television?

No disrespect to anyone here in the business and this oen could very well be a winner. I'm more curious if we have run out of original ideas.

Because anymore it seems when it's not old TV shows being done for the big screen it's old movies getting re-done.

Maybe I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, and maybe it's always been this way.

This is a long-standing (and rather revolting) trend. I recall movie versions of old TV shows coming out in the 1980's. However, it does seem to have picked up steam in the last few years, or perhaps just become such an integral part of the Hollywood movie-making machinery. Ninety-nine times out of 100 it means the movie in question will be lame or worse.

Then again, I'm looking forward to a movie version of Freaks & Geeks!

A lot of it has to do with baby boomer nostalgia and the fact that a studio has a much easier time marketing a film with a recognizable title. You can make a buddy cop comedy and call it "Starsky and Hutch" and everybody knows what it is. Or you can make the exact same flick and call it "McAllister and Jones" and have a much tougher time selling it.
