bertrand Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Carl Allen is supposed to be doing an Elvin Jones tribute tomorrow at the Kennedy Center. Is he double-booked? I'm glad I didn't get a ticket yet. I wonder what's going on. Bertrand. Edited May 5, 2006 by bertrand Quote
BeBop Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 I tried to catch Golson (with another Organissimo board denizen) in Fort Lauderdale, but he (Golson) cancelled. So I wasn't sure whether he'd make the Oakland gig. While tempting, I can't bear to step into Yoshis. So perhaps another day. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Caught this show in Seattle on Tuesday with fellow board member TroyK (who seems to have been lost in the laughing gas incident). Good, solid playing--it was terrific to see Golson. Good anecdotes and stories between songs, just like Poppa Lou or Gerald Wilson. The pianist was a monster; Buster Williams on bass was solid; drummer was "okay". I think it was about $20 in Seattle as well, and I agree--"giving it away." Go if you can. Quote
BruceH Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Maybe I should check this out. (!!!) The last thing I saw at Yoshi's was Bobby Hutcherson with McCoy Tyner, and that was great. Quote
bertrand Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 (edited) Carl Allen did play in D.C. tonight, so he must have had a sub with Golson. Their website is mum. Bertrand. Edited May 7, 2006 by bertrand Quote
mrjazzman Posted May 8, 2006 Author Report Posted May 8, 2006 Carl Allen is supposed to be doing an Elvin Jones tribute tomorrow at the Kennedy Center. Is he double-booked? I'm glad I didn't get a ticket yet. I wonder what's going on. Bertrand. Correct, Carl had an engagement in Washington, Eddie Marshall filled in for him(did a great job imo)on Saturday, he was back for the final set Sunday night. Along with Sonny Rollins, Roy Haynes and maybe a few others, Benny Golson is one of only a few MASTERS left. Great show from a guy who is 77 years old and who has been playing, arrangeing and composing for 50+ years................ Quote
