jazzbo Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 Any comments would be appreciated on this date.Like to find one but is it worth looking? Thanks It's a small group jammin' session not unlike the "Cosmic Scene" that Mosaic put out recently. I've not heard it in a while, and I'm away from my collection for a few months so I can't revisit it right away. It's certainly not essential unless you're a second Columbia period Duke completist, but it is a fun session to have and hear. Who knows, maybe it will come out in the US on cd one of these days? (I wouldn't hold my breath but it could happen in a few years; I live with hope these days.) Quote
Shawn Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 I haven't unpacked my CD's yet, so I don't feel like digging through boxes to find it.... But AMG says: Review by Scott Yanow Discovered in Columbia's vaults 19 years after it was performed, this recording features a septet from Duke Ellington's orchestra keeping busy in the studios mostly playing standards and blues. With altoist Johnny Hodges, baritonist Harry Carney, trombonist Lawrence Brown and cornetist Ray Nance all having ample solo space, these renditions are quite enjoyable, swing hard and sound fresh. Ellington fans should pick this one up. Now, my opinion is that any album that gives Hodges, Nance, Brown & Carney ample solo space...is worth getting. I LOVE the small group sessions that Duke recorded throughout the 50's/60's. The Violin Session is another favorite. Quote
JSngry Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 It's a "small" session, but absolutely beautiful. Is it worth looking for? Definitely. Quote
