Greetings all--

I'm an unabashed fan of the Sounds, and have most of their recordings on wax. I was surfing around half.com the other day, and came across listings for these CDs put out in '96 ('98?); interesting they came out as individual CDs and not as a 2-CD set.

I was wondering if some of you could weigh in on these recordings--from 1970, if I'm not mistaken. I have to admit I'm not a HUGE fan of Live at the Lighthouse--it seemed a little further out and less in the pocket than the Sounds were used to or comfortable with. I'm also a little nervous about the presence of a number of Beatles covers ( :o ); but my love for the Sounds could probably transcend these concerns.

And a side question, since I'd love to throw the biz to a board member--does anyone have extra copies of these they'd like to sell? :excited:

Thanks in advance for your input!

I have one of the volumes, and it's by far my favorite 3 Sounds album. That probably wouldn't be a 3 Sounds fan's concesus, someone who's really hardcore maybe. It kills "Live at the Lighthouse" imho. I real nice recording. Nice and funky, but totally acoustice.j

Of course, I'm going from memory here. So I could be wrong. ;):D

Guess its time for the former Gene Harris Fanatic to chime in here.

While I dig the Live at the It Club recordings, they are quite different from the "classic" Sounds BNs. Considering that you are not a big fan of the Lighthouse recording, I would actually hesitate to recommend them, at least not without giving them a listen first.

If you search for "Gene Harris" on Amazon you can find clips from each of the albums. I'd go there first before committing. I should mention though that somewhat surprisingly, there are a couple of the tunes on Volume 1-Love for Sale and Green Dolphin Street-have the same arrangements as the original studio versions.

And I was hoping you would, Dan!

Thank you both for your thoughts.

I listened to the samples and like them; I guess I'll have to pick these up.

[Jim, we need an emoticon of cash flying out of a wallet. Seems to be a common sentiment on the board!!!]

I don't know how these slipped under my radar when they first came out. Looks like they're still available new, and I did see several copies at Half and Amazon marketplace.

I've got both volumes but have only listened to the first one multiple times.

I like it very much. The new drummer is great. It's not quite the classic Sounds but Gene Harris was on that evening.

Will have to listen to the second volume. Picked that one up recently, and haven't spun it yet.

I'd go for it!
