JohnS Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Anyone steer me in the right direction to get this cd at a reasonable price. It's in the Concord sale but I get the idea they don't ship outside the US, or it's ridiculously expensive. Quote
Dave James Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 John, Sorry, I can't help you in your quest, but two snaps for mentioning Steve White. I stumbled upon him when I was randomly dowloading some of the OJC catologue from e-Music. He was on one of those Nocturne Records "Jazz in Hollywood" sessions. Not only can he play a pretty mean tenor, but he sings on a couple of tunes as well. He's got that '50's hipster jive thing down to a tee. Good stuff from an almost more than obscure artist. Up over and out. Quote
JohnS Posted July 27, 2006 Author Report Posted July 27, 2006 Dave, More or less my views too. Had my appetite whetted by the cd he shares with Virgil Gonsalves which I found easily and cheaply but the second cd has proved elusive or too expensive. Sidewinder, Is your in box full? tried to reply to your pm. John Quote

sidewinder Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 (edited) As an aside - anybody else seen Steve White play live? At a West Coast Fest held at Newport Beach in 1999 they did a reunion of the Lighthouse All Stars. Steve White was in the crowd with sax case in hand, was called out and did several numbers. Caused a bit of a stir at the time as it was something of a rare and 'impromtu' performance. Quite a character, I recall and I enjoyed his performance. I'm looking forward to weizy sending me the Fantasy sale CD. Edited July 27, 2006 by sidewinder Quote
brownie Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 I like that Steve Smith fellow. Found the CD at the Academy shop in NYC several years ago. Quite an interesting tenorsax player who also sings in a Frank Rosolino way, only wilder! Only part of the session is on that Steve Smith Quartet release. The balance is on another CD from the Jazz in Hollywood Series 'Virgil Gonsalves Sextet/Steve Smith Quartet/Quintet Quote
