White Lightning Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 Vic Dickenson, one of my all time trombone favorites, was born 100 years ago today. I just love his playing and his dry humor. Vic has always added an extra oomph to every session he played in Some of my favorite recordings by Vic are his Vanguard sessions with Ruby Braff and Ed hall and "Gentlemen of the Trombone" Any love for ol' Vic round here? Happy Birthday! Quote
Free For All Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 Count me in as a Vic fan, Barak! I think we'll be hearing from Lon as well. I love that side you pictured. Quote
Harold_Z Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 Vic was a stone gas. I'm fortunate to have seen him play many times. He ALWAYS played ! Quote
sidewinder Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 The archetypal classy mainstream trombonist. He makes it sound so easy. I'll dig out that Vanguard 'Essential' 2LP set later today. Quote

B. Goren. Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 I like his recordings with Lester Young on Aladdin. Any recommendation as a leader??? Quote
Harold_Z Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 This is the one to start with. It's the cd reissue of the Vanguard lp above (minus one track). Great stuff. Everybody is playin' on this one. There is also a Storyville cd under Vic's name. I have it home, but can't recall the name and can't find it online. Vic w. Red Richards, etc. Reaaallll Nice ! Quote
