Rooster_Ties Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 (edited) Not half bad -- and not a tune I'd ever had expected to hear a pop cover of -- THAT'S for sure. <-- Link Can't tell for sure, but it appears to be pretty recent (within the last 5 years or so would be my guess). Ski Oakenfull -- Cover of the Joe Henderson classic. Directed by Toru Tokikawa. Featuring Valerie Etienne on vocals. Released by Columbia France The original is from this album (with Joe on vocals too, amazingly)... Edited September 1, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote
JSngry Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Are those original yellow-label Milestone LPs they're frisbeeing at the end? Hey, it's got a good beat and I can dance to it. I'll give it an 87, Dick. Seriously, I read an interview w/Monday Michiru somewhere where she mentioned that the original was one of her favorite cuts to play when she was doing DJ work in Japanese dance clubs in the early 90s. People danced to it! It's possible that that's what planted the seed for this tune to get into the "dance underground"'s consciousness, finally resulting in this song/video from an artist on Sony France. America is waaaaay behind the curve. Surprise. I'm finding out that the dance underground has no problem relating to a lot of this type jazz, the "spiritual" type stuff, as Dusty Groove calls it. Food for thought, that... Quote
JSngry Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Now, who the hell is Ski Oakenfull? According to AMG http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll : English DJ Dominic "Ski" Oakenfull began mixing his "dozing jazz" in the early '90s, playing into the trends of acid jazz and following the reign of Gilles Peterson. Formerly going by the moniker the K-Creative, Oakenfull signed to Peterson's Talkin' Loud label while still in high school. He had a brief stint with Raw Stylus, but fully absorbed the house scene while mixing things up with Talkin' Loud labelmates Galliano on the band's 1988 debut 4. As the '90s progressed, Oakenfull worked with various singer/songwriters including Valerie Etienne and completed several side projects like the compilation Sun Sun. By 1999, Oakenfull switched gears to fully focus on his debut Life Changes. This Gilles Peterson guy is a name I keep seeing whenever there's a jazz/dance music connection. I bet there's a story there.... Quote
