Tunisia hosts the “Jazz à Carthage” festival

By Nour Antir

For its third session, “Jazz à Carthage” will be held in Tunisia from April the 12th till the 22.

Being a mode of expression pertinent to the Afro-Americans, Jazz music had been adopted by displaced artists from all over the world as a tool of resistance meant to carve a space for the voiceless to speak and the marginalized to exist.

Being a transgressive genre of music, Jazz may be perceived as a spiritual healer to the soul.

It is a marker of identity which celebrates africanity and “re-rights” the oppressed people’s history.

To Abdullah Ibrahim for instance, Jazz is a tool of resistance against the ragged Apartheid system in South Africa.

During the present session, the mother country will be refered to by Richard Bona, an icon in the field whose music allows for groove, R&B and pop to intermingle.

Kenny Garret, saxophone virtuoso who toured and recorded with Miles Davis, will perform with his quartet a music which embraces Chinese rhythms. Experimenting with Jazz in such a way may bring one to negotiate it-Jazz-from a multicultural perspective.

Leading the audience to discover new facets of Jazz, Anwar Brahem, a talented Tunisian musician who won the Edison Award, will unveil the desert’s marvels through the “Sahara Trip” in which the gap between East & West is bridged and the play between tradition and innovation is created.

Shifting from polyrhythms to polyphonies, The Belgian Aka Moon band performs in a different register a totally deterritorialised music which celebrating multiculturalism.

Thanks to her skilled musicians and sublime voice, Dee Dee Bridgewater sings extracts from a French love songs repertory entitled “J’ai Deux Amours”.

Al Di Meola, a prominent guitarist inspired by World musics will also be present in the festival.

Given that 2007 is the year during which two living jazz legends will turn 80, a celebration whose theme is historicsig Jazz will take place in order to remember 160 years of Jazz and honour the two famous artists.

Accompanied by his back-up band the Kings of Rhythm, Ike Turner is scheduled to take part in this salient event.

Sugar Blue alongside Thornetta Daviswill will be the compeers of the “Papa Joe” jazz club.

Being the main characteristics of this year’s festival, multiculturalism and universalism will be also expressed through painting with the Citizen Jazz art exhibition and movies with Ciné Jazz as well as the Jazz Autrement concerts at the Ennejma Ezzahra Palace with the participation of Tunisian artists such as Wajdi Cherif,Blue Note project, Mehdi Trabelsi and other acclaimed artists including Amina Figarova from the Netherlands, the Duo Guinga Mirabassi from Brazil/Italy and l‘ Âme Des Poètes from Wallonia-Brussels.

In a bid to enrich this cultural encounter, meetings with the present performers will take place with the participation of the Centre of Arab and Mediterranean Music School of jazz project.

Transcending boundaries and going beyond any notion of reductivism, “Jazz à Carthage” is expected to allow for new experiments on Jazz while preserving its original aspect and value.
