GregN Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 UP because Greg found this video of Pink Floyd recording Echoes from Meddle. Check out the tape deck at 1:19. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5sht8MB37o Looks like my Scully! How cool is that? Guess it depends on how cool you think Pink Floyd is. I believe the three of us were listening to different sorts of production at Jim's one night, and he put Echoes up... The production is vibey as hell...no denying that. Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Jim, have you tried running the Scully at 15 ips with no noise reduction? I find personally that DBX kind of kills the analog advantage - if the tape is wide enough noise levels might be ok - Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted April 17, 2008 Author Report Posted April 17, 2008 That's how I'm running it now. The tape hiss is not bad at all. Once I get it calibrated and I know how hard I'm hitting the tape, I bet it will be even better. One thing I noticed about this machine as well; the meters are totally unbuffered, which means they are probably feeding back a little bit of rectifier distortion from the meter coils themselves into the audio. Some people like that and it's part of the charm. I need to get the machine calibrated to know, though. Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 you've made me a happy man, thinking about analog - i recently did some quick saxophone recording on an old tascam, 1/4 inch, no noise reduction - too much noise for release, but the sonic depth of field just cannot be matched by digital - let me know if you wanna do a remote recording in Maine - Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 and I'll see if I can get Sonny Williams for the session - if I can find him - Quote

I have a Tascam 388. I find a lot of the noise on my 388 comes from the onboard mic pres. Did some tests using other pres and since I am only tracking a few tracks the noise isn't bad. Not going to compare to Jim's Scully by any stretch of the imagination, but it might work. g Quote
