ladenso1 Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 I've got the Bainbridge LP reissue of the _Sonny Clark Trio_ album on Time, and the piece titled "Sonny's Crip" on that album is _not_ the piece titled "Sonny's Crip" on the Benny Green Time album (that I also have the Bainbridge reissue of), nor "Sonny's Crib" (Blue Note). Those last two are the same: very hard-boppish 44 bars blues-with-a-bridge structure. In contrast, the "Sonny's Crip" on the Bainbridge LP reissue of the Time LP is accurately described by the liner notes of one Pete Spargo: "a bright dance-like swinger," similar to "Junka" and "Sonia" on that album. I've recently discovered that a number of Sonny's pieces on Blue Note were also done on the two Time LPs but mistitled. I'm wondering if the piece labeled "Sonny's Crip" on the Sonny Clark Trio album on Time is also actually a piece Sonny had recorded earlier under another name. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 There was only one LP on Time - maybe there was another one in Japan with the alternates discovered later. There is a SACD reissue by Audiofidelity which sounds superb with all the material available - it has the original cover and title: Sonny's Crib is the correct spelling. All the compositions on that Time LP (Bainbridge was an LP reissue label) were recorded for Blue Note with larger groups. Quote
ladenso1 Posted June 1, 2007 Author Report Posted June 1, 2007 There was only one LP on Time - Yes, there was only one LP with Sonny Clark as the leader on Time. As I noted in my original post, the other Time album I was referring to had Benny Green as the leader. The title "Sonny's Crip" appears on both of them. On the Benny Green album, the tune labeled "Sonny's Crip" is the same as the tune labeled "Sonny's Crib" on Blue Note. In contrast, on the Time album with Sonny as the leader, the piece titled "Sonny's Crip" is something entirely different. Just listen to it, and then to "Sonny's Crib." I ask again: is the piece titled "Sonny's Crip" on the Time album with Sonny as the leader, a piece that he had earlier recorded under a different title. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Sonny Clark Trio "Crip" is somethin' entirely unlike anything else. (or is it close to "Little Sonny" ?) Bennie Green "Crip" = Sonny's Crib "Crib" but Bennie Green "Cool Struttin'" = Cool Struttin' "Blue Minor" and great no matter whachacallit! Quote

You're right, that's two entirely different pieces. The Time/Bainbridge Bennie Green liner tells: Sonny's Crip, a title that began life as Sonny's Crypt but became garbled in transmission ... Hard to tell what happened. Both are blues, someone should compare the changes. Someone else with a complete Sonny Clark collection should listen through the heads of all of his own tunes. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Too bad the Sonny Clark Discography doesn't list composers, like a serious discography should ..... Quote
