Hot Ptah Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 We have a lot of Christmas albums at my house, but not that many of them are listenable all the way though. I just noticed that Dave Brubeck has a Christmas album. Has anyone heard it? Is it worth getting? Can it be listened to all the way through without pain? Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 If you truly enjoy Christmas music and have lot of it, Brubeck's disc would fit in wonderfully. But be aware - it is solo piano. If you like solo piano, it great. Do you have Oscar Peterson's Telarc CD? I find myself grabbing that disc more often than Brubeck's. Quote

I have the Brubeck, Peterson and Shearing Christmas albums all on Telarc. I got them all last year in Half Price's Christmas bargain bin. Out of the three, I like Peterson's the best and maybe the reason why is that his sounds the jazziest out of the three. The Shearing is a little stiff at times, but enjoyable enough. I reach for the Brubeck the least, I think because it just doesn't grab me the way the other two do, in a way that puts you in the holiday spirit. I mean, its played well, its just that it doesn't sound very Christmas-like, if that makes any sense. Edited December 22, 2007 by Holy Ghost Quote
John Tapscott Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 I have it and agree with all the above comments. It's nice enough but somewhat one-dimensional. It's quite reflective and low-key, maybe the CD you play late on Christmas Eve. One of the reasons I like the Dave McKenna "Christmas Ivory" CD so much is because it touches all the emotions of the season from joyous to reflective to bluesy. Quote
Bright Moments Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 the brubeck is very nice. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted December 22, 2007 Author Report Posted December 22, 2007 Thanks for the comments. I have the Peterson and like it. I also like Marcus Roberts' Christmas album, better than almost all of his regular albums. I think I will try the Brubeck album. There should be a glut of very inexpensive holiday CDs at Half Price Books shortly. Quote

You should be able to land one for about $6 or so. Quote
