Why no mention of the (possibly wonderful) Thurman Barker set at the fest?

Are there any recommended Thurman Barker recordings? I saw him a couple of years ago at an AACM concert in New York and he was at least near-wonderful, but I don't have any of his recordings.

He's the drummer / percussionist on Anthony Braxton: Performance Quartet (1979) on Hat.

I just listened to this album for the first time last night. There was a lot to like. I ha to follow up with a couple of Keefe Jacksons afterward and am now looking forward to hearing Roll Down.

We were in town last year for the festival and caught Rosaly with Fast Citizens twice. I'm a fan. I really like his style.

The one that I hear the most growth in has been Jeff Parker. To me, he just keeps getting deeper and deeper into the music. How do the Chicago folks feel about Parker's guitar playing?

Agree about Parker. Another strikingly good, highly individual Chicago guitarist is Matt Schneider. No recordings yet, I believe, except for one track on the "Document Chicago" CD, but he's something else and has been performing a good more recently with his new group, A Fox Can Be Hungry:

Matt Schneider - guitar

Jason Adasiewicz - vibes

Anton Hatwich - bass

John Herndon - drums

He writes great/strange tunes, too, perhaps something like Dick Twardzik's originals.

FYI, there will be a Matana Roberts Chicago Project CD release party at the Velvet Lounge the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. The first night will be Matana Roberts, Jeff Parker, Josh Abrams and Frank Rosaly, and the second night will also include Fred Anderson.

Unless a second album with the same title and line-up is coming out, the CD Release party is for this thread's original topic.

This could be worth lugging some recording gear in for. Especially the second night.

Indeed. Odd that they'd be having a "release" party so long after the actual release though. I was hoping the project might be ongoing. Anyways, sounds like two great nights!
