Jams_Runt Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 I've been threatening to start a thread on Michael Blake. His Lucky Thompson album is killer. So far it's only out on download to my knowledge, but it's one of the few tribute albums from the last fifteen years I'll be spinning frequently as Blake captures a lot of what made Lucky so special. I love Michael Blake's tone--round and full like a tenor player from the '40s and he can play Lucky Thompson as convincingly as he does John Lurie. Quite a talent with quite a range. The song with Lucky talking about the music industry is called "Scratch" and it has a more modern sound than the rest of the album. Amor de Cosmos is great as well, and don't forget that Palmetto has re-released Slowpoke's first album with two bonus cuts-- their version of Neil Young's "Harvest" is smokin' as folks say around here. (Slowpoke is Blake, Tronzo, Sherr and Wollesen.) Yeah, this is turning out to be a great season for Michael Blake fans. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 (edited) Thanks for hipping us to this broadcast, aloc! I've been listening for about 45 min. now and some commercially unreleased Lounge Lizards is on as I type this. Yeah, Blake is a fine player. When I heard him with Ben Allison and The Herbie Nichols Project here in Seattle a few years back I pointed out his kinship with Thompson in the review I wrote and later heard back from Ben that Michael really appreciated that little aside as he had never before come across a reviewer who heard the Lucky connection in his playing. A bit more recently I heard him with Hellbent at Tula's and it was a hell of a show. That band is a kick! Steven Bernstein, tubist Marcus Rojas and Calvin Weston... review I'm hoping that he plays with Ben Allison's Man Size Safe group when they hit town. Edited March 6, 2008 by Bill Barton Quote

AllenLowe Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 good show, but the Feminist "we are the world" Tribute to Valerie Solanis that he's now playing seems inappropriate - even if Hillary Clinton is a fan - Quote
