Van Basten II Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Although he got famous for directing The English patient, i'll mostly foundly remember him for The Talented Mr Ripley. sidewinder Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Damn tragic - that was an operation he should have survived, just total bad luck. RIP to a very decent person, by all account - and quite the opposite to these typical Hollywood fat cat pandered self-osessives. 'Ripley' is the one film of his that I really enjoyed. Quote
BillF Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 'Ripley' is the one film of his that I really enjoyed. I'm reading a volume of three Ripley novels at the moment, so am looking forward to seeing the film for the first time. Quote

At least one of the Chet Bakers and 'Saxophone Colossus' I think. Quote
kinuta Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Terrible news, and an awful waste of a talented writer and director. Quote

AllenLowe Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 not crazy about either of those moveis - and as I recall there are some anachronistic jazz record covers in Mr. Ripley - Quote
Robert J Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I got to meet him at the English Patient world premiere in Toronto. Very nice and humble man. Worked well with author Michael Ondaatje to film the "unfilmable" book. Still not seen Ripley yet, though I never understood why Cold Mountain got snubbed as it did - pretty faithful to Frazier I felt. And good use of Nicole Kidman whom I don't usually like. Quote
