The Magnificent Goldberg
Dayton Selby, a DYNAMITE organist, only recorded once, to my knowledge. He was o Eddie Chamblee's fabulous Prestige album "The rocking tenor sax of Eddie Chamblee". If you got my BFT, you'll have heard Dayton waking y'all up! Dayton must be getting on - he has a pre-Jimmy Smith style so must have been working on the organ since the early fifties. However, I see from the sleeve notes of Gloria Coleman's new CD, "Sweet Missy" http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...c=41697&hl= that she is a friend of Dayton. YAAAAYYYY!!!! So, all you Newark residents, get on out there and find him!!!! MG
7/4
Maybe I'll stop by and say hello, Newark is about 10 miles from here. Don't know what else I could say... .
Teasing the Korean
How is David Selby these days?
The Magnificent Goldberg
I've written to Pete Fallico, saying Dayton needs rediscovering! MG
Peter A
Dayton Selby, a DYNAMITE organist, only recorded once, to my knowledge. He seems to have made a couple of records in the 50's-60's: - Design Records (DLP-37): Dayton Selby Trio featuring Willene Barton, 1959 (LP) - ABP Paramount (10030): Dayton Selby Trio - Do A Little / La (Dee Dah), 1959 (45). He is on a single of Ronnie Underwood on Prestige (don't know who that is): - PR 45-352 Ronnie Underwood - Night Jet c/w Long Walk Home Dayton Selby (org) Walter Longley, Ronnie Underwood (g) Russell Annaken (b) Alvin Rogers (d) 3 female singers (vo) NYC, March 10, 1965 - Long Walk Home - Night Jet He might even have recorded a couple of LP's in the 70's under the name of the Dayton Selby Sound. Couldn't find any info on these. Regards, Peter Edited March 28, 2008 by Peter A
The Magnificent Goldberg
Very interesting - thanks for that. Pete Fallico has already responded to my e-mail. Thanks for the nice email. Yes, I agree...Dayton is a jewel! I have had that album with Eddie Chamblee for decades. Dayton does not play much any more. He told me a few years ago that he sold his Hammond. Gloria keeps in closer contact with him than I do. I may record Sarah McLawler next... I'm waiting for her to assemble her all-girl band for me... The Magnificent Goldberg
- Design Records (DLP-37): Dayton Selby Trio featuring Willene Barton, 1959 (LP) Damn! I just remembered my mate has (or had) a copy of that Willene Barton LP! MG
