Bumping a thread after an hour and twenty min.? Maybe you need to look for an answer somewhere else if you need an answer that quick.

I am no longer in shooting, just editing, so I am not acquainted about the most recent models.

Talking about video quality Sony, Panasonic and Canon have usually good products both in miniDv and HD DV format. (just avoid the 'Handycam' size)

The biggest problem is good audio. Usually broadcast quality external mikes need power supply and have XLR connector, (and they are expensive), so you'd need a camcorder with such facility: power supply and XLR connections, usually only the most expensive ones have it.

In my experience the onboard mikes are far from broadcast quality.

Chris - I have actually found that the cheapest 3 chip camera shoots video that is essentially broadcast quality, the technology is surprising good - as for sound, an issue, yes, though, once again, I have found that a good external mike or an adaptor (which I have) can produce surprisinlgy good sound - in the multitrack recording world these days the essential technology is the same, what you pay for are special feaures, of which I know little when it comes to cams, though I don;t know if it is the same situation - would like to spend about $500 - will have to do a bit of on-line research -

If you can use ext mikes, and you have some skill about it, sound shouldn't be an issue for you.

In my experience in upper segment of non broadcast cams, you don't pay useless extra features, you pay for qualities like definition, reliability, easy to use. I mean that a good viewfinder or a real manageable focus and zoom and iris controls while shooting is hard to find in very small cams. You can't shoot in automatic for broadcasting.
