Dave James Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 I've been spending some time with Trane Whistle over the last few days and I've come to the conclusion that this may be the Davis equivalent of best in show. Sure, there's the large group aspect of this that I think may have toned down some of his "blowing" proclivities, but, regardless of the reason, this one just comes together very, very nicely. Up over and out. Quote

Ted O'Reilly Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 There's a Davis record (never on CD?) for RCA in late '66 that never got much attention, but I always liked: "The Fox And The Hounds". It's also with a big band, directed by Bobby Plater. Quote

I'll start a search. I had them both on LP. In mono! Quote
Shawn Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 Looks like it's still available: http://www.amazon.com/Lock-Hounds-Eddie-Lo...8651&sr=8-7 Quote
BillF Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 Trane Whistle is a great album, but I'd be reluctant to name it as Lockjaw's best, if only because I find it so dominated by the personality of Oliver Nelson that I file it in my collection under Nelson's name, rather than Davis's. Quote

That's ten bucks cheaper than Amazon! http://www.oldies.com/product-view/28122.html Quote

Re filing, as a listening experience I find it closer to the Mosaic Nelson Studio Big Band Sessions than to Lockjaw with Shirley Scott or with Johnny Griffin. Quote
paul secor Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 Just my opinion, but I never heard it as one of his best records. Quote
BillF Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 It's a fine record which perhaps should be seen as Lockjaw performing with an Oliver Nelson orchestra an extended version of what he so brilliantly managed in the Basie band. Quote
