medjuck Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 I got a Blue Ray player a few months ago but haven't bought any discs yet (I'm running out of room for more DVDs) though I've rented several from Netflix. So far my favorite is Ford's "The Searchers". It was shot in Vista Vision and the Blue Ray transfer looks great--so much so that after viewing the whole film I began to watch parts of it with the sound off so I could concentrate on the visuals. Anyone here have any other films to recommend that they think look particularly good on Blue-Ray? I'm looking forward to seeing some older Black & White films. Quote
BruceW Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 No, I don't have any but, reading your experience has practically sealed my fate to go ahead and convert to Blue Ray. I have heard a lot about it, researched it and really appreciate your testimonial. Especially the fact that you were talking about DVD discs as seen through Blue Ray. We also have a ton of DVD's. Don't know what to recommend to you, except if you liked the Searchers, you would probably like any of the old westerns with their scenic expanses etc. Maybe the Last of the Mohicans (new version with Daniel Day Lewis). My research says that any regular DVD will look great on Blue Ray. One caveat, do not try Hi Def DVD. They will not work on Blue Ray. I'll be joining the Blue Ray club right after my big op coming in 13 days. Quote
medjuck Posted September 9, 2008 Author Report Posted September 9, 2008 Yes regular DVD discs do look a bit better on Blue Ray machines. I bought my machine the day after HiDef went down the tubes with the Warners announcement that they were going Blue Ray. I decided to do so after comparing some regular DVDs to Hi-Def tv broadcasts of the same films. I'd been a skeptic until then. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 This spring I bought a Sony ES Series Blu-Ray player, BDP-S2000ES. http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores...552921665228713 I could not be happier. DVD discs look fantastic, and Blu-Rays are addictively and seductively wonderful in playback. On top of that the sound on this player is excellent, fantastic on Blu-Ray (I think the improvement of sound on Blu-Ray can be even greater than the improvement of picutre) and very very good on dvd and cd. My taste in dics is not as sophisticated as many here, but here are favorite transfers of mine on Blu-Ray: 2001 The Shining Eyes Wide Shut (indeed, all three of these Kubrick transfers are perhaps the best pictures yet on Blu-Ray in some ways) Spiderman 3 The Fifth Element Ultraviolet House of Flying Daggers Curse of the Golden Flowers Alexander (Revisited) Kingdom of Heaven And I have bought three tv seasons on Blu-Ray that look wonderful, Lost Season 3, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Heroes Season 2 Quote
.:.impossible Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 I hesitate to buy into Blu-Ray. After seeing Verizon Fios at my parents' house a few weeks back, I am sort of doubtful that hardware will have a place in the market for very long. The 1080p on-demand that I have experienced at my house is nice (TW), but nothing at all compared to the Fios signal that I saw. Still, DVDs are stunning, and I only have a progressive scan Sony from years back connected to my Panasonic! I've considered upgrading to a upconvert Oppo, or even a Blu-Ray, but I don't own many DVDs as is, and can't imagine investing in a format at this point. I've seen Blu-Ray, and it is gorgeous, but I just don't know how much MORE gorgeous it really is unless I am sitting a foot from the screen. Quote
