Ted O'Reilly Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Word has come from Whitey Mitchell's daughter, Lesley Mitchell Clarke (her husband is drummer Terry Clarke) that her father succumbed to cancer on the weekend... "I am so sad to let you know that my dear Dad, noted jazz bassist, comedy writer/producer and author, Gordon "Whitey" Mitchell passed away on January 17th at his home in Palm Springs, Ca. He was surrounded by his daughters (myself, as well as my sisters Karen and Michele) and his beloved wife, Marilyn as he finished his long, valiant battle with the cancer that ultimately took him from us." Whitey's brother was Keith "Red" Mitchell, who died in late 1992. Some more info at http://www.answers.com/topic/whitey-mitchell Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Sad ... another one from the golden age of jazz who's gone. RIP. Time to pull out his Sextette album on ABC Paramount or "The Mitchells" album "Get Those Elephants Outta Here" on Metrojazz and give them a spin. Quote
Christiern Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 (edited) Apropos largely unpublicized stragedies in the jazz world, Mickey Roker, who not long ago lost his wife, has now also lost a son. Very sad. Edited January 20, 2009 by Christiern Quote
