connoisseur series500 Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 (edited) I just bought this session from ebay and should be receiving it next week. I couldn't resist this session which includes Duke Pearson, Willie Wilson, and Pepper Adams. Perhaps my alltime favorite Duke Pearson session is "Dedication" with the same lineup. In fact, it appears to be the same session only with 5 alternate takes added. What's with that? Anyone know or have this session, and is it worth it just for those extra five takes? doubleM Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 They're all alts' I do believe, so I guess it comes down to how much you like "Dedication", and how much you care about hearing those other 5 takes. There isn't a discernable difference in sound, that I could hear. I owned 'em both and sold my copy of Dedication to someone on this board. I like the cover art on the Freddie. Quote
Free For All Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 It's my understanding that this was trombonist Willie Wilson's session originally. IMHO, he's just an OK player and I've never heard of him before or since. I bought this side because of Freddie, and he doesn't disappoint. Can't go wrong with Pepper, either! Quote
Daniel A Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 I think I read somewhere that the session was intended as a Willie Wilson release on Jazzline, but that it never came out, and subsequently was released as a Duke Pearson album - which, in all fairness, it was to some extent. It appears that Duke did organize the date to help an old friend of his. If I'm not mistaken it was Wilson's only appearance on record. Quote
