MLB 2009 Pool

Borrowing from Ken Davidoff of Newsday, here's how it works: Post your predicted place in the standings for every team, plus wild card entrant, LCS result and WS result.

One point for each correct standings prediction.

Two points for each correct Wild Card.

Three points for each correct participant in the League Championship Series

4 points for each correct participant in the World Series

5 points for naming the World Champion.

Unlike Newsday, however, there will be no prize awarded, only the thrill of predicting the future six months in advance.

I'll just stick with my Newsday predictions:

I haven't been following along all that closely in the off-season, but I'll give it a whirl:

AL EAST

Red Sox

Rays

Yankees

Blue Jays

Orioles

AL CENTRAL

Twins

Indians

White Sox

Royals

Tigers

AL WEST

Angels

Rangers

Athletics

Mariners

NL EAST

Mets

Braves

Phillies

Marlins

Nationals

NL CENTRAL

Cubs

Cardinals

Brewers

Reds

Astros

Pirates

NL WEST

Dodgers

D'Backs

Giants

Padres

Rockies

AL Wild Card: Rays

NL Wild Card: Braves

ALCS: Red Sox over Angels

NLCS: Cubs over Dodgers

World Series: Cubs over Red Sox

(I guess this gives me a slight rooting interest in the Cubs this year)

As far as the AL East, Red Sox may have the advantage schedule-wise. I think they play the Rays and Yankees a total of less than 10 games after July 1, or something along those lines. (plucking that from memory off of something Buster said a few days ago). I'm banking that the Rays will be able to squeeze past the Yankees in the end.

I think there are two ways to look at that schedule quirk (if its true, I hadn't realized before), and one works against the Sox. I expect the Red Sox to be better by mid-season, with Smoltz in the rotation and (hopefully) Daniel Bard added to the pen. So playing most of the Yankees - Rays schedule before then could put them in the hole. On the other hand, playing the lesser teams of the league with their best roster could be a help.

Actually the part of the schedule I like best is that somehow the Sox are finished with trips to the West Coast in May, while the Yankee trips are mid August and mid-September. That's a big advantage, with the Yanks having to go cross-country in the dog days, and then during the pennant push.

In the end though its 162 games, may the best team(s) play in October.
