Bob Jones - R.I.P.

I just learned of the passing last month of Bob Jones, a recording engineer best known for his LP mastering work for the U.K. label, Ace Records. The LPs he did for Ace in the 1980's are some of the best ever done. Much of the music that Ace reissued had only been presented in mediocre fashion before Bob Jones worked his magic. He respected and honored the music - I should say he loved it - and presented it in the right way. I regard the Bob Jones mastered LPs I have as treasured gems.

In the early 1990s, I sent Mr. Jones a fan letter, probably an unusual thing for a recording engineer to receive. He was gracious enough to reply, answering questions about the speakers and amps he used to monitor the music he put on record, and even invited me to visit him at his studio if I ever made it to England. I never made it over there. "Carpe diem".

That would have been the old CTS Studios in Wembley, I guess? Some great jazz recorded there, over the years.

Jones was one of the best in his field, and this is very sad news for the vintage music fan.
