ghost of miles Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 Hey all, I'm working on an Afterglow program for Prez's centennial that will at least partly focus on records he made with vocalists. In addition to Billie, Una Mae Carlisle, and Helen Humes, any other singers that he recorded behind? Quote
mikelz777 Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 (edited) Marie Bryant on a couple of numbers from "Jammin' The Blues". I don't know if you want to count Jimmy Rushing when Pres played with Count Basie. Edited June 21, 2009 by mikelz777 Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 21, 2009 Author Report Posted June 21, 2009 Marie Bryant on a couple of numbers from "Jammin' The Blues". I don't know if you want to count Jimmy Rushing when Pres played with Count Basie. Oh yeah, of course--well, there's an obvious one I overlooked! Quote
paul secor Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 Pres plays (rather dispiritedly) along with Sarah Vaughan on "I Cried for You" - One Night Stand - The Carnegie Hall Concert 1947. Quote
BeBop Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 Don't forget to include Pres himself singing (with Oscar Peterson). Oh wait, you have to worry about FCC and all that indecency stuff. Quote
jeffcrom Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 On the 1953 Metronome All Star date, Prez improvises behind Billy Eckstine on "How High the Moon" and "St. Louis Blues." Each of these was a two-sided single; side one was slow, with an Eckstine vocal, and the other side was fast, with lots of solos. Prez also solos on "St. Louis Blues" - a pretty nice solo. I've got these on a Moon CD called Lester Young: Rarities, but I think there's a more recent CD with all the master takes of the Metronome All Star bands. Incidently, "How High the Moon" has a phenomenal, twisted solo by Warne Marsh. Quote
