Rooster_Ties Posted August 10, 2009 Report Posted August 10, 2009 (edited) DAMN!!! What is it with Harry Whitaker not (or almost not) releasing stuff until it's been in the can for a good 30 years?? "Black Renaissance" from 1976 barely came out at all (back in the day), and really didn't see any even modest distribution until less than 10 years ago. And now this, all from 1981 & 82, but which only just came out last year. This is mostly one hell of barn burner!! (Forget the AMG review, trust me, this is great!) -- though I'll agree with them, that the first track is kind of a snooze... . ...but the rest (almost 44 minutes worth) is REALLY fantastic -- in the Dusty "spiritual" sense. Terumasa Hino is on nearly every track, and Rene McLean's on well more than half the album (exclusively on tenor too), and Gary Bartz is on everything that Rene isn't on. And the last two 'long-ish' tracks have a double-size group that also includes Steve Grossman, John Stubblefield (and others). What's not to like?? Sangry -- you NEED this one, trust me. It's available on CDBaby, or Amazon (both with samples of most or all the tracks), or worst case: cheap copies can be had easily on-line in the usual places (for like $2 or $3 a pop, plus postage -- or if they're already gone, then less than $7, plus postage). THIS DATE KICKS ASS. VERY much "Black Renaissance", the sequel. (McLean and Hino are both outstanding here -- fans of either or both should really take note.) Not sure if this is limited to just the U.S., or available world-wide -- but you can stream the whole thing HERE. Remember, skip the first track (trust me). Edited March 2, 2017 by Rooster_Ties Quote
kh1958 Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 I found a used copy of this one yesterday--you are right, it is good. How's the other Harry Whitaker on Smalls? Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted March 2, 2017 Author Report Posted March 2, 2017 (edited) And in related news... Tommaso Cappellato & Astral Travel play Harry Whitaker's "Black Renaissance"... Seems to be from the same performance, but (more?) multi-cam? Or maybe a different show? Edited March 2, 2017 by Rooster_Ties Quote
