JSngry Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 Ok, so I'm being a little (or more) snarky, and I do love Lou's funk bag, but... "If Ever I Would Leave You" has taken my breath away, so bold is the tempo & phrasing (it's almost in Little Jimmy Scott territory...) & "Parker's Mood" is still fucking with my head as we speak. A wholly different take on Bird, and a damn strong one at that, just not one you think about when you think about either Phil Woods or C. Sharp, ok? The rest of it is indeed funky, as in Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree, Richard Tee, Chuck Rainey/Ron Carter, and Bernard Purdie funky. With Hank Crawford on top. Available on CD. Carpe diem this funk. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 I like this one a lot. Agree 100% about those two tracks. Always thought that Hank's style was a condensation and emphasising of Bird's sound on "Parker's mood". The title track was heavily sampled by Salt 'n Pepa for their cut "Step". Joel Dorn didn't like this album. He also didn't like the fact that S & P sampled it; but there might have been pecuniary motives behind that. MG Quote
