Norm Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Hank Mobley - Quintet I picked this up "blind" a few weeks ago as part of a larger order from Tower, but with the Coltrane boxes arriving literally the same day, it is only tonight that I've removed the shrinkwrap and put it in the player (Beatles mono set to arrive tomorrow so I've got to get it in now). Wow! What a great Mobley date. For those who don't have this one, his partners are Art Farmer, Horace Silver, Doug Watkins and Art Blakey. Recorded in March 1957 but remastered by RVG last year. Great playing all around by each and every member of the quintet. This was something like 6.99 at Tower -- one heckuva deal. I don't hear about this one as much as some other Mobley dates, but its a real treat. Quote
Big Al Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Art Farmer seems to be the wildcard here on what is essentially a first-rate Messengers date. I like his blend with Mobley (apparently Silver did as well, using them on a couple of his dates). Quote
Kyo Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 I agree, it's a really good one. One of my favorite sessions included in the Mobley Mosaic set. Quote
Shrdlu Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Check out the 8/18/57 session with Kenny Dorham, too. "My Reverie" is especially good. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 "My Reverie" is a first rate Mobley ballad, one of many, and "Funk in Deep Freeze" from the session in question (originally, with Farmer not the one with dorham) is a great title for something funk-but-cool. I really like the names Hank gave his tunes, really must post the poem I made out of 'em here and quit just taling 'bout it... Quote
