marcello
A great artist. I have two of his original, signed photos. Billie Holiday and Trane/Elvin. A huge influence. He wasn't afraid of low light and the dark, but used those factors to produce high art in photography. Here's the Trane / Elvin:
jlhoots
The Sound I Saw is a great book. He also collaborated with Langston Hughes on The Sweet Flypaper Of Life.

blind-blake
I always loved his stuff. I once curated an exhibit of his photos. He was such a nice guy, in addtion to being so obviously talented. Not a good day. First, we had to put one of our dogs to sleep, and now this. sheldonm
The Sound I Saw is a great book. He also collaborated with Langston Hughes on The Sweet Flypaper Of Life. "The Sound I Saw" can be picked up very reasonably and should be on everyone's shelf if you love jazz or just great photography. I bought several copies a few years ago and gave them to a few friends. I picked up "The Sweet Flypaper of Life" from a rare book dealer about 5 years ago. A very short ready but nice. Very sad to hear of Roy's passing...very sad! Mark~ Edited October 31, 2009 by sheldonm
Dave James
Marc Myers over at jazzwax.com has a nice piece on DeCarava. Among other photos, there's one of John Coltrane with Ben Webster. Up over and out. Edited October 31, 2009 by Dave James
paul secor
Roy DeCarava who took superb photos of many jazz greats died Tuesday. Obit in today's New York Times The obit includes several of his images! I never heard his last name pronounced - only saw it printed. The Times obit confirmed what I thought was the correct pronounciation.
BruceH
Roy DeCarava who took superb photos of many jazz greats died Tuesday. Obit in today's New York Times The obit includes several of his images! I never heard his last name pronounced - only saw it printed. The Times obit confirmed what I thought was the correct pronounciation. Same here, with one difference: As usual, I've been pronouncing it incorrectly for the last 20 years. Oh, well. We can all be glad he lived such a long life. RIP
