Oxford American 11th Annual Southern Music Issue

Just picked this up today, and it's full of fascinating stuff. It includes a 2CD set, half of which is devoted to musicians from Arkansas. Sadly, no Bubba.

Also included is a great article on Billy Lee Riley, written by Allen Lowe.

Is the music on the CD "new" material, or is it stuff that's been previously released?

In the past they have always been previously released but obscure material. I guess copyright issues have prevented Oxford from being able to release the more usual suspects.

Bought this last night as a Christmas present for my record-store-owner friend...he's religious about picking up the music issue but hadn't gotten this one yet.

thanks for the compliment - this is a terrific issue; they always come up with some good, obscure stuff, and the CD is a lot of fun.

I loved writing about Riley, who was a great blues singer.

Always a great read and also a very cool CD (now two CDs)! I subscribed last year after years of buying on the newstand (or is it news stand?). Its like $20 a year for four isssues, including the film issue with DVD.

I was finally hipped to this magazine two years ago by a friend (the issue with Monk on the cover). Although I looked for it last year I missed it somehow but I picked up this year's issue last week. The music is really great imo. I really enjoy all the genres they put on the disc so having a cd full of rare/esoteric artists is a real plus. I think I only knew about three or four artists on the Southern Music disc. I went out to the website and ordered last years issue too. It was half price too so that was a no brainer.
