alocispepraluger102 Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 the lyricism and power is remarkable-------------has he performed and recorded much on the instrument? Quote
brownie Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Sonny Rollins played soprano in the '70s mostly. His first recorded appearance on the instrument was on the 'Next Album' session for Milestone in 1972. Interesting solo on 'Poinciana'! Other albums where he plays soprano include 'Horn Culture' and 'Easy Living'. There may be others... Personally, I'ld rather listen to him on the tenor! Quote
Shrdlu Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Somehow, I missed this. I've never heard any of it. But it's not surprising. So many tenor players recorded on soprano at that time: Wayne Shorter, Zoot Sims, Gerry Mulligan and so on. (Yes, Gerry was a tenor player, hee hee.) Quote
JohnS Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 The solo on "Poinciana" is very listenable. I can take or leave the others soprano tracks by Rollins. But then I'm not a big fan of the soprano. Quote
Shrdlu Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 John, I'm insulted, lol. (Speaking as a soprano player since 1965.) Quote
JohnS Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 (edited) Apologies Shrdlu, please don't feel insulted, no offence intended. After 'trane it seemed to become de rigueur for sax players to double on soprano. Not a good always a good idea. Edited December 12, 2009 by JohnS Quote
JSngry Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 "Poincinana" is an all-around gas, but it's best heard on vinyl, as the CD mastering robs the cymbals & the Rhodes of their full whoooooshiness. As a point of curiosity, Newk also played Lyricon on The Way I Feel, but really, there's no need to listen to it - or anything else on that album - yourself, just take my word for it, ok? Quote
