A Swiss movie production of "Ramblin Boy", an excellent movie about the career of Charlie Haden was shown this week at the

Portland International Film Festival. The Swiss director was present for a Q and A after the movie. The movie was superb

and covered Haden's entire career, from his childhood playing in his family's Country music band thru moving to the West

Coast and playing briefly with Hampton Hawes and others, before hookong up with Ornette. The Ornette period was covered in detail. Following that- time with Carla Bley and the Liberation Music Orchestra, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Keith Jarrett, time with Pat Metheny, his duo recordings on French Verve and then Quartet West, with finishing his latest family project with his children.

What was present throughout the movie was Haden's innate sense of timing, his unique set of ears to match partner's musical journeys, and his big fat sound that stands out among other bass players.

His continual searching for new projects and his wide musical interests keep him in demand and intrigued.

There is no plans at present time for a DVD release as the movie is making a tour of film festivals as well as jazz festivals-i.e.-next week in Belgium. The director dropped the fact that an ECM duo release of Haden with Keith Jarrett is due out in May.

I highly recommend this movie if it plays in your area...

Excellent film indeed!

And lots of great music making in it, with his family (Ramblin' Boy is a fine album, btw!) as well as with friends (including Keith J. - just so you know...) and some great footage, too, most notably from that Lisbon concert with Ornette's quartet where Charlie was arrested!

A superb musician, and I think a mighty fine person, too!
