when you order a mosaic set a few yrs after release

If you're referring to the black box sets, yes, sometimes Mosaic recycles serial numbers after a customer turns in a set for credit. I bought the 4-CD Gerry Mulligan set well after it went OOP (it popped up on Last Chance for a brief period) and it came in the low 2000 range. My receipt had a scratched out auto-generated number of 4977 overwritten with the recycled number.

It's meaningless to me. I couldn't care less what number I got, it'll sound the same as the others.

The number doesn't much bother me one way or the other. I wouldn't think it matters either if you're selling the set, unless maybe you have number one.
