Just received an e-mail from drummer Dannie D'Imperio informing me that trumpet player Jesse Drakes

has died.

Drakes is best known for playing and recording with Lester Young.

Oh that is a shame Has he been playing since those Lester days in the 50's?

Danny said that he was still playing but not taking anything other than club dates - no jazz gigs. Don't know the reason for that.

On behalf of the family of Jesse Drakes, thank you for sharing in our loss. A memorial service is being planned within the next 2-3 weeks.

Drakes' passing away was a last discreet touch to a discreet career.

I always liked the way he played with Lester Young and wished there had been more opportunities to listen to him!

I'm absolutely amazed - didn't even know he was still around. He had a real place in jazz history.
