No idea what forum area this should be in. Listening for the first time to a fantastic singer named Rene Marie, the 'Vertigo' album. Cut 10, which is a medley, starting with a beautiful, soulful version of "Dixie" ("Wish I was in the land of cotton..."), then segues into a beautiful, soulful version of "Strange Fruit" (the Billie Holiday lynching protest song), which then goes into cut 11, a beautiful, soulful version of Paul McCartney's "Blackbird" ("Blackbird singin' in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly, all your life, you've always waited for this moment to arrive..."). Don't remember a time music stopped me in my tracks quite like this. Thoughts?

I love that album - great take on 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top' too.

Less enamoured of the albums that came after - stray into a more soul/singer-songwriter mode.

Truly a brilliant record, fully deserving of the Penguin crown. Not a bad cut on it.

To the OP, I might recommend digging around on NPR's website for a brief story on Rene from last July 4 which plays into the subject of this thread. In that instance, she melded "Lift Ev'ry Voice" (The "black national anthem") and "The Star Spangled Banner" with ... controversial results. A very thoughtful and engaging performer.

I saw Rene Marie live twice. She mixed jazz standards with material that is not usually presented in a jazz show, such as Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". I found her to be a compelling singer.
